Reacting to Your Wife’s Phone Call While You are Busy at Work
I Just Called To Say I Love You
The other day at work the phone rang and my coworker excitedly said, “Oh, it’s my wife calling… (cutesy voice): ‘Hello honey.’” He proceeded to speak to her in a very unfamiliar tone – almost like a googoo gaagaa way. I at first laughed, but then thought to myself, “Why don’t I answer like that when my wife calls?”
Certainly my coworker and I each love our respective wives, but we must be on some kind of continuum that identifies our relationship with our wives. You might not think that the response to your wife’s phone call is correlated to your relationship, but it is. I have drawn up the following ‘Spousal Phone Response Continuum’. Have a look and see where you fall. For this to work you need to consider what your reaction would be during a busy day (state of stress).

unfortunately my husband probably falls at the far left end of the spectrum and i take full responsibility. what advice do you have for us annoying wives that insist on calling our husbands at least once during the day?

My husband used to talk to me about two seconds on the phone while he was at work, and it was very frustrating. However, now that he has a cell phone, he calls all the time.

Ok, swap “wife” with “husband” and I totally get it. In my relationship, it’s my husband who calls all the time when I’m busy. I’d say I hover between Pacifier and Embracer. We do end with “I love you”, but sometimes I’m just trying to get him off the phone! Great tie in to the photos, though – I think you nailed it.
Advice to compulsive callers: Just keep it short and ultra efficient – you won’t hurt our feelings and we’ll love you for it!

Oh my gosh this is too funny! I’d have to say that my husband is the one who calls me at work and I usually fall within The Embracer with short visits to the Pacifier.
