That is exactly why I want to read my spouse's diary. She thinks I don't read it, so she is willing to write anything. This helps me know what things are really troubling her. Maybe there are things she isn't ready to tell me.

Plus I can find out what presents she is getting me and if she is planning any surprises.

if someone knows their diary is going to be read it affects what they write, so if having edited info is what you are looking for then go ahead, but why would anyone want to read a diary when they can just talk to the person?

NOOOOO! Once when my wife was feeling especially insecure in our relationship, she read my journal looking for proof that I love her. Unfortunately, she found some entries I had written about other girls before we were married. She used it to torture herself and me for days afterwards. I don't feel I have anything to hide, but if she's going to get mad at me for what I have written, then she shouldn't read it.

I think there is an unwritten rule that you don't read anyone's diary unless:
A- They hand it to you to read a certain section, or
B- They are have passed away...
otherwise, it's a no no in my book.

I don't keep a journal but wife does. I look through it once in a while but haven't asked permission. I am operating under the assumption that it is ok unless I hear otherwise.

btw-I never find anything that gripping. I was hoping she was a CIA agent

I have a personal blog that my husband has an RSS feed for.

In a way, he does read my "diary," which means I don't write on my blog my deepest, darkest thoughts because I know he'll read it.

A follow up to this could be "do you read your wife/girlfriend/husband/boyfriend'swebsite"?

While this might look like a yes or no answer, I believe it is much more complicated than that. A relationship should be built on trust, so the diary-keeper should be trusting enough of their spouse to be ok with them knowing their innermost secrets, and the spouse should be trustworthy enough to not look if they aren't invited to look. (not to mention, they should also be trustworthy enough to be extremely careful with the information they have been trusted with. That means not taking anything written in a diary as an insult, or ever using it against the person.)
