You must initially pay with cash to get cash back. Paying with a card and expecting cash is a flawed assumption. Don't make that rookie mistake.

How do you encourage the merchant to give you the cash? The last several times I have returned items, the merchant has insisted on refunding on the credit card.

Are some stores better than others?

this is truly brilliant. this also brings up a topic perhaps you could address in the future. my wife likes to shop, and she ends up buying way too much. she inevitably comes to her senses and realizes she over bought and returns. she then will spend the refunded money on the next shopping trip. when i ask how much she spent, she deducts the refunded money as if it was a gift certificate, and tells me the total spent. how do i stop the madness.
