It's a well studied fact that backseat or side-seat driving (non driver directing and criticizing the driver) causes distraction and confidence issues. Maybe these drivers who miss opportunities and are overly cautious are that way because not only are they trying to concentrate on deriving, they are stressed out because someone is nagging telling them what to do. Even just knowing the person you are driving is watching your every move like a hawk can be a debilitating distraction. I think the solution would be for the passenger to read a book or play a handheld game so the driver can focus on what they are doing and not the opinion of the passenger. Women freak out more because they are more concerned with being criticized and demeaned.

My husband is forcing me to get my license even though I've told him numerous times I have no interest in it. Then while on driving lessons he constantly lectures me about what I should and shouldn't be doing (most of which is made up and completely contradicts what I learned in my driving course) all while chewing his finger nails til they practically bleed & screaming gems like "You're driving in the other lane!!!" At this point I am a fantastic driver until my husband sits in the passenger seat and my confidence drops below zero. Then I get flustered, panicked, defensive, argumentative, completely lose all my focus and make terrible mistakes. I mean I already told him I do not want to drive so why is he being such a jerk about it? No idea! I guess its a man thing.

Quite right Pat, doesn't matter who is doing the back seat driving..male or female its infuriating to be in a car with and just a distraction to the driver that, far from helping, is more likely to result in an accident. My husband is an incureable back seat driver. He is no better a driver, he has had more accidents than me but just cant help himself. "Stop, go now, park there, watch that car/padestrian/cyclist, wait, go" etc etc etc. I often think of doing the same to him but know that it wouldn't make any difference to how he is when I drive and back seat driving just doesn't come naturaly to me. And Karlmalone, 9 times out of 10 when you see a car wrapped around a lamp post or on its roof at the side of a road its a male driver that was behind the wheel before he got carted of to hospital...hence why insurance for men here in the uk is twice what is for a woman. As for what to do about your back seat driver....grin & bear it or just give in & let them drive...there is no cure.

We married a little older so I'd been driving for about 15 years before I met my spouse. I am a good driver, but have to admit he's slightly better in certain situations, i.e. snow (in SoCal, we're not very used to that) or heavy city traffic. But most situations, I'm fine, and have a great driving record. But here's the thing. NO grown person, male or female wants to be frequently criticized or instructed, esp. while he/she is driving which requires focus, and requires not having added distraction or irritation. If someone feels that their spouse truly is not competent, then he/she should drive and not ask the spouse to do so. If you do ask your spouse to drive then ONLY make those comments that are crucial for everyone's safety, or navigate when the driver requests it. Backseat driving is EXTREMELY ANNOYING, anyone who constantly annoys the driver, creates an unsafe situation for everyone.

Is there any law in any country to sue the husband in case of an Accident made by wife on wheel, due to husband's back seat driving &bad comments.

I just hate it because when I'm driving, I'm talking to my wife telling her the do's and don'ts of driving and she ignores me. Then she gets into a situation and asks me what she should do and it pisses me off because she would know what to do if she would've listened while I was speaking.
